For years, companies have used degrees, previous employers, years of experience, certifications, and job titles as signals of ability. These signals are still useful, and I do not think they are going away completely. But they are not always the best way to understand someone's current skills. A developer may have learned a new technology outside their job, while a candidate with an impressive title may not have the practical experience needed for a particular role. This is why the future of technical hiring is likely to put more weight on skills, projects, practical assessments, and proof of work.
Why Technical Hiring Is Changing

A better hiring process should make it easier to understand the relationship between someone's background, skills, and ability to perform the actual work.

A project can show how someone applies their skills in a real situation. It gives a hiring manager something concrete to look at instead of asking them to make a decision based only on claims written on a resume. A developer can show an application they built, a designer can show a product they designed, a data professional can show an analysis, and a marketer can show a campaign and its results.

I do not think the future of hiring is about completely replacing resumes with portfolios or interviews with assignments. Hiring is too complex for one signal to tell the entire story.
Instead, I think companies will increasingly combine several sources of evidence. A resume can explain someone's background. A portfolio can show previous work. A technical assignment can demonstrate how someone approaches a specific problem. An interview can help assess communication, motivation, collaboration, and deeper technical understanding.
The goal should be to create a more complete picture of the candidate.
This is important because every hiring signal has weaknesses. A resume can be exaggerated. A portfolio can show only someone's best work. An assignment may not reflect how someone performs over a long period. An interview can be influenced by confidence and communication style. When companies combine these signals, they have a better chance of making a balanced decision.
I believe the strongest hiring systems will therefore move from "Which candidate looks best on paper?" to "Which candidate has the strongest evidence that they can succeed in this role?"

What matters is whether the work gives someone a reason to believe you can handle similar problems in a professional environment.
This is also why I recommend building your professional portfolio before you urgently need a job.
